The Lagos Food Bank Initiative
In the fall of 2021 the Liberty Family Foundation partnered with the Lagos Food Bank Initiative, an NGO based in Lagos, Nigeria. The Lagos Food Bank Initiative (LFBI) is a non-profit, nutrition-focused initiative that is committed to fighting hunger, reducing food waste, and solving the problem of malnutrition through targeted programs that seek to improve the nutritional food intake of beneficiaries. Part of the LFBI programs is outreach into hard to reach communities to provide much needed shelf-stable foods and hygiene products. It became apparent that their most important need at the time was a large transportation vehicle that could safely transport their volunteers altogether to better reach these communities in need. Through fundraising efforts and a generous donation from the LFF founder Michael Liberty, the Liberty Family Foundation was able to raise $25,000 to go towards the purchase of the vehicle.
The Candlelight Foundation Partnership
In July of 2021, LFF and the Candlelight Foundation entered into a mutual partnership to better aid the community they served in the state of Lagos, Nigeria. The Candlelight is a non-profit soup kitchen that caters to the homeless, needy and the “working poor” within Surulere (an area in Lagos). Their mission is to improve the thinking capacity and productivity of the chronically working poor by improving the nourishment of the body. They provide a hot meal to everyone who walks through their doors. They are open three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) and serve over 2,500 hot meals a month. At the start of our partnership, the LFF assisted with general funds with the mutual desire to expand the program. In the fall of 2021 LFF helped to secure a new location which would also be large enough to house the newly named “Mae’s Kitchen” as well as the new Street Kids to School safe shelter for young homeless youth. This shelter provides a safe place for the boys to reside while receiving regular meals, extracurricular activities and access to a quality education.
